What’s up everybody!! My name is Michael Schlegel and I just started the 6-max NL Intermediate Course. I have been playing poker professionally since graduating college in 2011. I began making decent money playing MTTs during my 2nd year of college and had the dream of being a full time MTT crusher. I had a very solid ROI (~55% lifetime ~$50 ABI) leading up to graduation, and then Black Friday happened a few weeks before I graduated and of course that changed everything. I still played the limited tournament schedule on sites still allowed in the US but it made me also dabble in cash games. I say dabble, because I never took it too seriously. I never put in close to enough study time to make any significant improvements and because of that never broke out of 100NL. I’ve been looking for a way to improve my game, but one in which there was structure and a step by step process and I am so happy to have found BPC! Anyways, I will use this blog to post my daily/weekly goals, homework, concepts that I’m working on, and anything that I have found to help me improve.

    Let’s WORK!!!

Yesterday I moved down from 50NL to 25NL to complete the 5k hands played homework to learn the intermediate preflop ranges. I played 4 tables on Bovada and 3 tables on BCP (black chip poker, not to be confused with BPC!) for about 7.5 hours. At least for the first hour I was just one tabling trying to get everything set up properly. I played 2653 hands with a WR of 8.39bb/100

Now for my goals for today:

    • 100 UhlvarEquity hands, under 10 seconds, under 5 avg error
    • review any tagged hands from yesterday’s session
    • review NOBS material and preflop ranges
    • Finish the 5k hands homework for preflop ranges with less than 25 preflop mistakes total (at 13 ATM)
    • submit 5k hand report for review

I’m finished playing for the day. I wish I was able to put in more volume as I only played 2519 hands. I had trouble getting Table Tamer to work properly which took a lot longer than I had hoped for. I finished the 5k hands homework assignment which was the main goal so I’m glad about that. Here’s the graph…

Obviously not thrilled about the WR, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter as long as I’m improving and the lessons are sticking. I’m having to check the preflop spots a lot less and feel pretty good about that. I’m still making some postflop mistakes and getting a bit tripped up every now and then by trying to follow the NOBS guidelines as closely as possible.

    Review of today’s goals:

    • 100 UhlvarEquity hands, under 10 seconds, under 5 avg error – COMPLETED

avg error: 3.94 avg time: 7.78

    • review any tagged hands from yesterday’s session – COMPLETED
    • review NOBS material and preflop ranges – COMPLETED
    • Finish the 5k hands homework for preflop ranges with less than 25 preflop mistakes total (at 13 ATM) – COMPLETED

I ended up with 18 total preflop mistakes.

    • submit 5k hand report for review

I just submitted my first hand for review and am excited to get back the report and continue moving forward!

And finally, here are 10 hands from today’s UhlvarEquity practice:

I haven’t updated in a bit. Busy weekend with some friends flying into town. Ready to get back on the grind and put in a ton of work this week!

    Goals for the week:
    – Finish preflop module

    – stop needing to reference preflop cheat sheets by the end of the week

    – play 25k hands

    – update blog at least once a day

I realized that I’m making more preflop mistakes than I initially thought as I was only looking at one preflop filter. Overall, I’m still pleased with my accuracy after one week and 9 tabling. I’m going to go back to 50NL now that I feel more comfortable with the preflop ranges and the NOBS system and will backfill with 25NL.

    Goals for today:

    • do 100 UhlvarEquity hands, timed, in 25 hand spurts and review – COMPLETED
    • clean room and have neat working environment before starting my session
    • play 5k hands
    • review all preflop errors using the filters, as well as any tagged hand

I’ll post the last 25 hands I did on UE:

    Review of yesterday’s goals:

    • do 100 UhlvarEquity hands, timed, in 25 hand spurts and review – COMPLETED
    • clean room and have neat working environment before starting my session – COMPLETED
    • play 5k hands – INCOMPLETE
    • review all preflop errors using the filters, as well as any tagged hand – COMPLETED

I only ended up playing about 3250 hands. PT4 wasn’t catching my Ignition hands for the 2nd session so I’m not sure exactly how many hands I played yet. I could have definitely played 4k hands, but got lazy and stopped. I significantly overestimated the amount of hands played per hour on BetOnline. I think shooting for 4k hands for the time being is good. I got lazy once I realized how far away I was from 5k hands. That can’t happen!

I ended +167 Euro for the day. Very swingy day. I caught myself autopiloting a few times and getting sloppy with my preflop ranges as a result for short spurts. Postflop there are times when I need to go with my instincts and divert from the NOBS system every so often when I strongly believe that it is correct.

Preflop errors: 54; 1.66% error (out of 3250 hands)

    • Opening: 9
    • Calling: 15
    • 3b: 23
    • v3b: 7

    Today’s Goals:

    • 100 UE hands, timed, in 25 hand spurts. Review each set of 25 hands before doing the next.
    • create a video going through all of the relevant preflop filters
    • study the preflop 3b spots
    • play 4k hands with less than 1% error

    Review of Oct 4 goals:

    • 100 UE hands, timed, in 25 hand spurts. Review each set of 25 hands before doing the next. – COMPLETE
    • create a video going through all of the relevant preflop filters – COMPLETE
    • study the preflop 3b spots – COMPLETE
    • play 4k hands with less than 1% error – INCOMPLETE (error of ~1.5%)

I ended up playing 4512 hands at 50NL. My first session I felt like I played well overall and ran even better. In the second session I felt like I played pretty poorly and spewy in some spots and also ran poorly as well. Another Swingy day which saw me up 300 then down 100 and finish at +64 euro.

Yesterday I got the password to move on to the “Simple Preflop Exploits” section. I studied my preflop ranges, did 50 UhlvarEquity hands and review, and reviewed my errors on PT4.

    Today’s Goals:

    • 50 UhlvarEquity and review
    • review preflop ranges
    • review all tagged hands from last session
    • play 5k hands with less than 1% error – extra focus on 3b spots

I actually ended up doing 75 UhlvarEquity hands in 25 hands spurts. My results were:

    error: 5.44  time: 7.8;   error: 4.95 (huge misclick)  time: 8.0;   error: 3.47  time: 8.0

    Against a more optimistic range:

I have no reads on villain since it is from Ignition, but players tend to have wider ranges on there in general so I think it’s very reasonable to stack off with 99+ AQs+ AKo.

Villain seemed more than willing to stick his 40bb stack in previously, so we can use the optimistic range and call it off with 88+ AQ+. It’s great to see that even vs the pessimistic range, TT is still a call.

This guy wasn’t particularly nitty and due to playing the preflop ranges and card distribution I was playing a good amount of hands, but even against the more optimistic range we can still only 4b/gii here with JJ+ AK.

I believe that I have a pretty aggressive image vs the regs as I get played back a fair amount. I think vs this reg I can use the more optimistic range and 4b/gii with TT+ AQ+.

Villain has a bit shorter stack at 80bb so I think we can assume that he is likely a bit more fishy and can have the optimistic range. Even against the optimistic range we still can only call it off with JJ+ AK. At the end of the day, it’s such a big ojam that we need a very strong calling range.

Q: What range of hands can I call with after squeezing and facing a back-raise all in? A: Against a pessimistic range:

    Against a more optimistic range:

I never want to believe these back jams as it seems that, especially on Ignition, they tend to show up with more spazzes than most although this is usually when they are OOP. I still think that using the more optimistic range is best as a default on Ignition. Note that I included only half of the AA, KK, 99, AQs and AQo combos as I felt like those hands were the most likely to be either 3bing pre to begin with (AA,KK) or most likely to flat-flat IP (99, AQs, AQo). Against this optimistic range we can gii with TT+ AK. Even if we extend his range to a much more generous 77+ AJs+ KQs AQo+ we can still only add 99 and AQs to our calling range.
